Early in 2004 the DBA Board determined that there was too much at stake when it comes to Federal Dairy Policy and as a result a Federal Policy Committee was formed. The following is a summary of activities of the committee:
DBA members were invited and attended the annual policy forum held in Washington DC. This policy forum was sponsored by the International Dairy Foods association (IDFA) which is a lobbying organization representing both proprietary and cooperative dairy processors.
Ben Miller former Agriculture advisor for Senator Kohl was hired as a resource by DBA on federal policy issues.
On several occasions this year, DBA has been asked to support or oppose federal legislation concerning the dairy industry which has included; permanent forward contracting, extension of MILC, and proposed changes in Farm Service Agency rules regarding eligibility.
The Federal Policy Committee held a workshop in Wisconsin Dells on September 8 to develop a better understanding of federal dairy pricing. In addition, concerned DBA members and industry guests attended including economists, dairy processors, and University of Wisconsin faculty.
The next steps for the committee will be to develop a Federal Dairy Policy Agenda and build relationships so DBA can be involved as the 2007 Farm Bill is drafted.
