On average, dairy farmers will lose $1,000 on each cow in their herd this year alone, resulting in statewide losses topping $1.25 billion. While Wisconsin’s family farmers are losing money at record pace, State and Federal agencies are in the midst of implementing and proposing a daunting series of new regulations that will make it even more difficult for the Wisconsin dairy industry, the cornerstone of our state’s economy, to remain competitive. |

| Discussions about the environment or global warming all too often end up focusing a blame for greenhouse gas emissions of methane on dairy farms and dairy cows. There is a long line of antagonists who appear to be on a rhetorical mission of focusing blame for every one of the world’s environmental problems on agriculture. Even farmers practicing one type of agriculture are on the lookout for new ways to claim that their farming process is superior or more environmentally friendly than anyone else’s. But those claims more often than not are based on misinformation or emotion -- and not on science. |

| A Glut of Lies |
By Trent Loos
I wanted to start off by admitting that I am a dairyman wanna-be. I have never owned a dairy cow but have worked closer with the dairy industry than any other facet of agriculture in the past five years. I have some tremendous friends who are dairymen and women. Honestly, however, I do believe it is time to stop with the gloom and doom attitude and fix the problem. I am sick and tired of reading article after article that includes the word “glut” in it. We do not have a glut of dairy cows. We do not produce nearly enough milk in this country to meet the nutritional needs of 306 million Americans. We have an under-consumption problem. |
