Our strength comes from synergy

I am often asked what makes the Dairy Business Association stand out among farm organizations.

My short answer is that DBA is lean and nimble, making us quick to respond to the ever-changing landscape of agriculture.

It doesn’t take our board of directors a lot of time to make important decisions necessary to meet our members’ needs. I have been so impressed with our ability to move quickly and make sure we have the right information for those decisions.

Responsiveness is always important to our members.

The longer answer, and perhaps the greatest difference, is our organizational DNA. Unlike many other farm organizations, DBA has two classes of members representing both farmers (60 percent) — farms with fewer than 50 cows to more than 10,000 — and corporate members (40 percent).

These two classes are represented on the board and have full voting rights.

The founding fathers of DBA recognized the importance of having a strong synergy among farmers, suppliers, processors and other dairy community professionals. In my more than 30 years in agriculture, I only know of one other farm association that is like DBA and that is Cotton USA.

The value of collaborating and building on our combined strength is vital to our success.

It also provides a great way for agribusiness to work alongside farmers to build a stronger force on dairy, trade, regulatory and environmental policies. No longer can anyone do it alone.

DBA values the total dairy community in helping define its vision, mission and strategic direction.

At the board level, Mike North is the first corporate member to lead DBA. Mike, who was elected president of the organization in January and has been on the board since 2008, is founder and president of Commodity Risk Management Group in Platteville. He is no stranger to dairy, having grown up on his family’s dairy farm in southeastern Wisconsin and minored in dairy science in college.

We know it takes the whole system to realize dairy’s full potential and Wisconsin is blessed to have the strongest dairy community in the world. It’s only fitting that we leverage that strength.

Our vision is for America’s Dairyland to achieve success at its fullest. DBA and the dairy community must truly be united in those efforts, building on the expertise, energy and wisdom of the greatest farming and agribusiness minds in dairy.
