How to maximize your Instagram profile

Instagram can bring a lot of value to your farm or company — if you know how to take advantage of it.

Instagram was created in 2010 as a way for users to share real-time photos and videos to the public or pre-approved followers. It is important to note that Facebook bought Instagram in 2012, so the two social channels work very well together.
Gaining a better grasp of Instagram can maximize your time and talent in the social media world.

After posting a photo or video on Instagram, it is easy to share it on Facebook as well. You can also share it to Twitter and Tumblr. It’s best to use a mixture of videos and photos to increase the time people spend on your post. Similar to Twitter, it is important that you follow and use hashtags that relate to dairy. For example, a commonly used hashtag is #CowsOfInstagram. I recommend using this hashtag on your posts and engage with other people who use it.

With more than 150 million users on Instagram each day, it is critical that you utilize all the features of the platform. Instagram allows you to share stories,
similar to Snapchat, for all of your followers to see. You can now save your favorite stories to your Instagram profile, so people can view them longer than 24 hours. You also can upload more than one photo, which gives your followers an overall feel of the topic. I can’t forget to mention the ability to go live from your Instagram channel!

The challenging part about features on Instagram, and other social media channels, is that they are always changing. Try to stay up to date on the mobile app to keep your followers engaged.

Most social media channels allow you to view the metrics from your social media profile. Sharing your posts based on what your metrics show will help increase engagement. I recommend checking your metrics monthly to see if you are posting at a time when your followers are active. The metrics also show things such as gender and location.

Scheduling tools
Instagram likes users to post photos right away rather than scheduling them. There are not a lot of scheduling tools from which to choose. A free app that I like is called Later. It sends you a reminder to share a post that you created in advance. Another tool that I use is called Sprout Social. This is not a free app, however it lets me chedule posts to all of my social media channels, which helps make the best use of my time.
